Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force across industries, offering businesses the potential to increase efficiency, productivity, and innovation. However, the issue of bias in AI models has raised concerns about fairness, transparency, and ethical implications. Bias in AI: A Growing Concern


Bias in AI has emerged as a significant challenge for organisations considering AI implementation. Such biases can perpetuate discrimination, reinforce societal inequalities, and erode public trust in AI systems. In 2021, an OpenAI audit revealed gender and age bias in its CLIP model, and there are many more such cases where AI biases were detected.


To address this issue, AI researchers and innovators advocate for governance and compliance policies that emphasise the importance of assessing AI outcomes for potential biases. These policies should establish clear ethical guidelines for developing and deploying AI systems, including thorough testing of training data for diversity across demographic and socioeconomic groups. The ultimate goal is to ensure fairness and reliability in the resulting AI systems.



AI Governance: Ensuring Accountability


Efforts to address bias in AI are gaining momentum globally as governments recognise the need for regulations to protect individuals and promote ethical AI practices. New York City’s Local Law 144, which will take effect on July 5th, 2023, requires companies using Automated Employment Decision Tools (AEDT) to audit them for biases. This law is a step towards ensuring accountability in AI decision-making processes.


On a broader scale, the European Union (EU) has made significant attempts to develop comprehensive AI governance through the EU AI Act. Recently, the act passed the EU Committees’ vote and is set to be considered by the Parliament in the summer. Some new amendments include the obligation for AI vendors to register in the EU database and publish summaries of copyrighted data used for training. Other alterations to the act require expanding the scope of high-risk AI classifications to encompass health, safety, fundamental rights, environment, and recommender systems and systems that could influence citizens’ votes. 

The EU AI Act seeks to ensure that AI systems are overseen by humans, operate safely, and demonstrate transparency, traceability, and non-discrimination while also considering environmental concerns. After being approved by European Parliament, the bill will be put in front of the Council for final approval before it becomes law. 



Explainable AI: Unveiling the Black Box


One crucial aspect of ethical AI is the ability to detect and understand biases present in AI systems. Explainable AI offers a potential solution by providing insights into the decision-making processes of AI models. OpenAI, a leading company renowned for its language models such as ChatGPT and GPT-4, is testing the idea of using AI to explain AI.


OpenAI’s research lab is exploring the application of GPT-4, their most powerful language model, to analyse an older version, GPT-2. By utilising GPT-4 to produce and score natural language explanations of neuron behaviour in GPT-2, the team aims to enhance our understanding of how AI models work internally and identify potential biases.


The initial results are promising. However, it is important to note that the approach is more efficient for simpler models like GPT-2 and may face limitations when applied to larger models like GPT-4. Despite this, developing explainable AI techniques represents a significant step towards fostering transparency and accountability in AI systems.


Addressing bias in AI, implementing effective governance and policies, and promoting explainability in AI are critical steps in the journey towards ethical and responsible AI implementation. Businesses must recognise the importance of understanding and mitigating bias, aligning with emerging regulations, and embracing transparency to build public trust and confidence in AI technologies. By proactively addressing these challenges, organisations can harness the full potential of AI while upholding ethical standards and ensuring a fair and inclusive future.
